You don’t need money to play poker. If you and your friends have a standard poker night every month, there are ways that you can work around the money issue. There will always be a friend or two who cannot afford to join the game because they simply don’t have the money to make even the smallest of buy-ins. Obviously, this makes both the guys who can and the guys who can’t feel bad. If you experience this then we have some good news for you. There are ways around this.
Don’t play for money. The first option is to not play for money. Yes, it takes away one of the best parts of a poker game, but if it’s between friends, it shouldn’t matter that much. If not playing for money is a problem, you may need new friends. So, basically, you can use almost anything else to play with. Use poker chips but without the actual money behind it. Use beans or monopoly money or anything else that you can assign a value to and play with. Who knows, you may actually enjoy it.
Everyone gets their money back. This may be a little bit harder to swing, but if you and your friends are fairly level-minded and won’t be out to get each other, it may work. How it works is that you play with real money, but at the end of the night everyone gets their money back. So, someone will still win, but they will give back all their winnings so everyone walks away with the money they put in. Like we said, it could get tricky if someone is hell-bent on taking the money, but if you decide to try this everyone should be on the same page.
Have different games and different buy-ins. You can play different types of poker and have a different buy-in for each. This means that you can make a buy-in a few cents. So, the people who cannot spend as much as the others can play against each other in one game and the other can play against each other in a higher stakes game. This way, everyone gets to play what they can afford and no-one has to be sour-faced about not taking home the money they won.
Play for practice. Poker is a game of skill. To be able to win the money at the end of a game more often, you need to practice. You need to try out new strategies and see what happens when you take certain risks. What better place to this than between friends? So, instead of making poker night about money, make it about the skills and the company. You can help each other improve and become better poker players. When everyone is able to make a buy-in, go to a casino and show off the skills you have been honing. The wins will be so much more rewarding.
So, you see, poker can be played without money being the main focus. It may be a bit strange, but in the economic situation the world is in, people are struggling. These are ways in which you can keep enjoying poker night with all your friends without them feeling like they should rather stop joining the game.
