Some people may say that you only play poker to win money. I disagree. I think there is a lot more to poker than just money. Poker is to be a form of art. It is a way to see the world and people differently. It can teach us things. Poker may be a game with the objective of winning money but it offers you much more. If you have never played poker and want to know why you should try it, here’s why.
It is mentally stimulating. So many of us spend our lives in front of screens and often we do brain dead or non-stimulating tasks day in and day out. This is not good for the brain. This is why we get old. Poker has strategy and mathematics and reading people. These things require mental skills and are mentally stimulating. Poker also requires certain mental skills if you want to be a good player. So, it helps you hone mental skills like focus, discipline, and emotional control.
It is social. When we’re not stuck in front of a computer or television screen, we have our phones. We become isolated without realizing it. If you play poker with your friends every two weeks or once a month it is a good reason to get out of the house and spend some time with people. Humans are social beings and we need social interaction.
You can win some money. Money is still a reason even if it isn’t the only reason. Most of us can do with a bit of extra money here and there and if playing poker can get it for you then that’s great. However, when money becomes the only reason you plat, you will be focusing on the wrong thing and you will rarely enjoy the game. Winning money should be a side reason. Even professional poker players play for more than the money. They play for the challenge and the opportunity to show their skills.
It is fun. Playing poker is fun. You have to try and read people and figure out what cards they have. You have to play to get your cards to be better and you have to keep your cool. Humans like challenges. We enjoy succeeding at things and poker offers you the opportunity to constantly improve your skills and prove that you can be even better.
It’s a new skill. Learning a new skill is important. There are many things that we can learn to do and we should learn as many as possible. Just for fun. Poker can be one of these skills that you learn. Sure, if you do it really well you can win some money. The rush of winning and the rush of reading opponents correctly is unlike anything else. So, if you’re looking to learn a new skill, try poker.
